Artistic Leaders 2020
Tristan Carter
We are very excited to announce that Tristan Carter will be an Artistic Leader for Ethno New Zealand 2020!
A Composer, violinist and improviser Tristan Carter holds an MMA in Composition from the New Zealand School of Music where he studied composition with Jack Body, John Psathas, Michael Norris and Dugal McKinnon. He gained a Bachelors in Violin Performance from the NZSM, under the tutelage of Doug Beilman (formerly) of the New Zealand String Quartet.
He has a keen interest in cross-cultural collaboration, working with the Atlas Ensemble in Amsterdam, traditional musicians in Bangalore, and taonga pūoro musicians of New Zealand, as well as playing in a variety of cross cultural ensembles. He has had his music played in Taiwan, India, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and Scotland.

Tristan had his first Ethno experience in 2019 and quickly became a part of the wider Ethno New Zealand whanau.
Hanna Wiskari - Griffith
Hanna returns to Ethno New Zealand 2020 with her bounty of knowledge and heart.

Hanna is Swedish musician and educator, based in Auckland since 2016. With a background in various musical genres, the Scandinavian traditional music that she grew up with has always been closest to Hanna’s heart and that is what she graduated with (Bachelor Degree) at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
With more then 15 years of experience as a freelance musician with numerous bands and projects and extensive tours she has formed her own distinctive soprano saxophone sound and has put lots of work in to how to use this non traditional instrument in a folk music context. Hanna has always been a passionate educator, teaching both youth and adults.
Hanna has participated in Ethno camps since she was 16 and has worked as an Artistic leader for Ethno Sweden since 2010 (6 camps), with the project Ethno on the road in 2015, Ethno Australia 2016 and Ethno New Zealand 2018 and 2019.
Jeremy Hantler
Jeremy also returns with his infectious energy and wealth of musical talent!
Jeremy is a percussionist, Instrument repairer, and taonga puoro maker, with a wealth of experience, playing in folk, country, hip-hop, jazz, brazilian, afrobeat, and improv bands.
In 2017 Jeremy travelled to Ethno Sweden and Ethno Estonia on full scholarship to study working with youth in a world music context, and also attended the International Orff Summer Course for teaching in the creative arts, before presenting at the MENZA conference in Wellington.
In January 2018 he was one of the Artistic leaders at the first Ethno New Zealand camp and has attened Ethno World’s Artistic leaders course - Ethnofonik-in Paris, France in November 2019, funded by Creative New Zealand.
Jeremy makes his own music but is driven by the power music has to uplift people, to develop youth into functioning, engaged adults, to form stronger communities, and to further appreciate the beauty of the world.
